Dialogues 2017

Dialogues 2017

The second edition of the IDFC Institute Dialogues was held in Goa in April 2017. It brought together a small, select group of “pracademics”, policy makers, practitioners, politicians and businesspeople to freely deliberate implementation struggles around some of the thorniest policy challenges facing India, in an off-the-record format. This year's Dialogues was co-chaired by Amitabh Kant, (CEO, NITI Aayog, Government of India), Nandan Nilekani (Co-Founder, Infosys, and Former Chairman, Unique Identification Authority of India), and Dr. Rajiv Lall (Founder Managing Director & CEO, IDFC Bank).

Attendees included Jayant Sinha (Minister of State, Civil Aviation, Government of India), Justice Dhananjaya Chandrachud (Judge, Supreme Court of India), Haseeb Drabu (Finance Minister, Jammu & Kashmir), Rajeev Gowda (MP, Rajya Sabha), Jay Panda (MP, Lok Sabha), Milind Deora (MP, Lok Sabha), Manvendra Singh (MLA, Rajasthan Assembly), Sanjeev Sanyal (Principal Economic Advisor, Ministry of Finance), Gulzar Natarajan (Indian Administrative Services), KP Krishnan (Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship), Bibek Debroy (Member, NITI Aayog), Rajiv Mehrishi (Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs), Nandini Piramal (Executive Director, Piramal Enterprises), and Rohini Nilekani (Chairman & Founder, Arghyam).

This year's event focused on State Capacity with four sessions on Urbanisation, Criminal Justice, Use of Technology and Behavioural Science to Augment State Capacity, and the Investment Climate. Over two and a half days, speakers made presentations and engaged in group discussions. The discussions had a sharp focus on implementation and execution challenges. In the coming months, we hope to action many of the ideas that were incubated at the event.
